When to go to Sydney

Sydney is in the southern hemisphere, so December to February is summer and June to August is winter. What changes through the year is the weather, the crowds and the events.

On the weather figures alone, September to November is the best stretch. Temperatures rise through spring and the monthly rainfall is lower than in March to June. That is a preference based on averages, not a promise of dry days, and it is not the best season for everyone. Summer suits swimmers, winter suits Vivid, and New Year's Eve has its own pull.

Rain, storms and indoor plans

What to do when the weather turns.

A guided tour of the Opera House takes about 60 minutes and covers a route through the building. Which halls you see depends on the day's program. The Architectural Tour runs about 75 minutes on Saturday mornings and on some Sundays. A show is another dry option, and the foyer under the shells looks out over the harbour. See the tours guide and the tickets guide.

In the garden, do not shelter under trees in a thunderstorm. The garden can close early in extreme weather. Heed signs and staff instructions.
