Vivid Sydney 2027 at a glance
Vivid Sydney is a winter festival of light, music and ideas. The 2027 edition runs from 28 May to 19 June, which makes 23 nights. The festival is run by Destination NSW, a state government agency. This guide is independent and has no link to the festival or to the Opera House.
The Opera House sits at the centre of many visitors' plans because the sails are lit at night, and the walk from Circular Quay to the forecourt is short. The full 2027 program is still to be announced, so use this page for the dates and the practical side, and check the program before you pick an evening.

What is known about the 2027 program
Dates are set. The detailed line-up comes later.
Dates
The festival runs from 28 May to 19 June 2027. Do not carry dates over from earlier years, because the calendar changes from one edition to the next.
Lighting the sails
The festival's 2026 highlights listed Lighting of the Sails: Opera Mundi. That was a 2026 production. The artists, the title and the schedule of the 2027 sails show are still to be announced, so do not book travel around a specific projection until the program is out.
What costs money
The Light Walk is free. Other experiences can need a ticket, a payment or a registration in advance. That includes the live music events, so do not assume that every concert is free.
Badu Gili is separate
The Opera House lists the upper podium area as a viewing point for Badu Gili. That is a different program from the Vivid sails show. Do not mix the two when you plan an evening.
Sydney Opera House tours and harbour trips
Daytime tours pair well with an evening of lights. See live prices and availability.
Plan your Vivid evening
Crowds, weather and the way in.
Crowds
The festival organisers describe Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings as the busiest. Earlier in the week is calmer. If your dates are flexible, pick a weekday evening.
Weather
June is a cool month. The long-term average is a high of 17.0 degrees and a low of 9.3 degrees, with 133.1 mm of rain on average. May is a little milder, with a high of 19.5 and a low of 11.6. Bring a warm layer and a rain jacket. In dangerous weather parts of the festival can be restricted.
Getting to Circular Quay
Circular Quay is served by the T2, T3 and T8 train lines and by the L2 and L3 light rail lines. Trains and light rail run from about 5 a.m. to 1 a.m. daily. The walk from the quay to the Opera House takes about 7โ10 minutes. Public ferries also leave from the quay. Use an Opal card or a contactless card and tap on and off.
Circular Quay guide โOpal daily cap
The adult daily cap is AUD 9.65 on Friday to Sunday and on public holidays, and AUD 19.30 on Monday to Thursday. The busiest Vivid evenings fall on the lower cap. The airport station access fee is not part of the cap.
Driving
The forecourt is largely car-free. The Opera House car park is open 24 hours and is entered from the northern end of Macquarie Street. The height limit is 2.2 m. Drive-up rates are AUD 20 for up to 1 hour, AUD 40 for up to 2 hours and AUD 60 beyond that. Paying online does not reserve a space.
Where Vivid falls in the calendar
New South Wales school holidays in 2027 do not overlap with the festival.
| Period | Dates in 2027 | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Autumn school holidays | 12โ23 April | Ends five weeks before the festival |
| Vivid Sydney | 28 May to 19 June | 23 nights |
| Winter school holidays | 5โ16 July | Start about two weeks after the festival |
School development days come on top of the vacation dates, so the real school-free days can differ. Standard Opera House tours cost AUD 52 for adults booked in advance and AUD 57 on the day from 1 April 2027, so a daytime visit during Vivid uses the new prices. See the tours guide for the full price list.
Where to stay for Vivid
Pick an area by how you will get home.
The festival organisers name The Rocks, Circular Quay, the Sydney CBD and Darling Harbour as suitable areas to stay for the festival. Barangaroo, Pyrmont and North Sydney are also listed. That is a list of areas, not a ranking of hotels. Check the real walking route or the nearest train or light rail stop for the property you are considering. Darling Harbour is a different part of the city and not the same as the Opera House waterfront.
