Circular Quay and the walk to the Opera House

Circular Quay is where the city meets the water. Trains, light rail, buses and ferries all arrive here, and the Opera House sits at the eastern end of the waterfront. Most visitors use the quay as their gateway: you arrive, find the water and walk along it to Bennelong Point.

The walk from Circular Quay to the Opera House takes about 7 to 10 minutes. Treat that as a guide for the last stretch, not as a promise of a step-free route for every visitor. If you have a tour or a show booked, allow extra time for crowds on the promenade, especially on weekend evenings.

Opal fares and paying for transport

Prices in 2026, in Australian dollars.

Pay by card or phone

Use an Opal card or a supported contactless card or wallet. Tap on when you start and tap off when you finish. Use the same card or device for the whole trip so the system can add up your fares.

Daily and weekly caps for adults

The adult daily cap is AUD 19.30 from Monday to Thursday and AUD 9.65 on Friday to Sunday and public holidays. The weekly cap is AUD 50. Child and concession caps are AUD 9.65, AUD 4.80 and AUD 25, but eligibility is checked separately, so confirm yours before you rely on them. The airport station access fee is not included in any cap.

From the airport to the city

With Opal or a contactless card, the adult fare in June 2026 was AUD 21.64 off-peak and AUD 22.94 at peak times. That includes a gate pass of AUD 18.61. Children pay AUD 18.15 and AUD 18.80, including a gate pass of AUD 16.64. Children aged 4 to under 16 count as children, and under 4 travel free. A single paper ticket from a machine costs up to AUD 24.20 for adults and AUD 19.50 for children.

Parking at the Opera House

Most people do not need a car here. The forecourt is largely car-free, and the car park is under the building. If you do drive, enter from the northern end of Macquarie Street. The car park is open 24 hours, seven days a week, the clearance is 2.2 metres, and a covered route leads to the Lower Concourse.

Drive-up prices in 2026 are AUD 20 for up to one hour, AUD 40 for one to two hours and AUD 60 beyond two hours. A weekend day booked online with exit before 5 p.m. starts at AUD 23, depending on the product you choose. A Flexi Saver rate of AUD 29 to 33 applies depending on demand. The old Early Bird deal is no longer sold at this car park.

Online prices include a platform fee, and paying in advance does not reserve a specific space. Taxis and private cars use the marked drop-off area on Macquarie Street. Accessible parking on the concourse under the Monumental Steps no longer exists, so use the car park instead. Cyclists and scooter riders must dismount at the edge of the site and walk or carry their ride. This does not apply to wheelchairs and other mobility aids.

Getting to evening shows

A free service for matinee and evening performances.

A free, wheelchair-accessible courtesy bus runs between Circular Quay and the Opera House for matinee and evening performances. It is not an all-day shuttle for tours, so do not plan a daytime visit around it. Check the pick-up point before the show. For the building, venues and tickets, see our Opera House tickets guide.

If you are heading to the fireworks on 31 December, plan separately: the Forecourt needs a free ticket and the roads and stations change that night. Read the New Year's Eve guide before you leave your hotel.
