New Year's Eve at the Opera House
New Year's Eve in Sydney is not a normal visiting day. The forecourt of the Opera House is one of the viewing zones for the harbour fireworks. It is free, but it needs a ticket, and the entry window is short. Plan the day around it.
There are two fireworks displays. The one at 9 p.m. is called Calling Country, and the main show follows at midnight. The harbour fireworks are launched from the Harbour Bridge, the Opera House and other landmarks. This guide is independent and has no link to the event organisers or to the Opera House.

The Opera House forecourt
Free, ticketed and limited to 6,000 people.
Tickets
Entry is free with a ticket. Tickets are issued from 26 December at 10 a.m. A booking can include up to 6 tickets. The capacity is 6,000 people.

Entry is only between 12 noon and 3 p.m. The site stays open from 12 noon until 1 a.m. Once the entry window closes you cannot get in.
How to get in
Enter from Macquarie Street via Bent Street. There is no access from Alfred Street. Everyone goes through a security check, and there is no re-entry once you leave.
Not allowed
Portable chairs, glass and metal containers, drones, pets, camping gear and shade canopies. You cannot bring your own alcohol. Drinks are sold on site and there are water points.
Accessible viewing area
The Opera House lists a separate accessible area for registered guests. Entry is between 4 p.m. and 10 p.m., with up to 4 tickets per person. Small folding chairs are allowed in that area only. Details on registering are due in November.

Getting there and planning the day
Transport details are still to come.
Roads and trains
The detailed road closure and transport plan is still being finished with Transport for NSW and is due in November. Do not rely on times from earlier years. Look up the plan before you go and allow extra time.
Circular Quay
The station serves the T2, T3 and T8 lines and the L2 and L3 light rail. The walk to the Opera House takes about 7โ10 minutes. Use an Opal card or a contactless card and tap on and off.
Circular Quay guide โTours on the day
